Antique Uzbek 'Nim' Suzani, Shshrisabz Region, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 7in x 3ft 9in (140 x 115cm).

Antique Uzbek 'nim' suzani, silk on a soft red cotton ground.

Circa 1900/20.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of a small size known as 'nim' suzani, which means half embroidered; the silk embroidery is on a soft red cotton field. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan, Shahrisabz region. The suzani would have been used as a small cover or wall hanging, they were also used on special occasions to cover the ground for the serving of food, like a table cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and no repairs, there is very slight fading to the cotton ground. The suzani has had the backing replaced with printed Russian cotton with a floral design.

The suzani is ready for display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Suzani is a decorative hand-embroidered textile traditionally created in Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, as a central component of a brides dowry.

Suzanis are typically worked in silk thread on narrow handwoven cotton or linen base panels using chain stitch, couching, and basma stitches before being joined together.

Authentic antique pieces feature hand-spun cotton ground fabric, natural vegetable dyes that produce subtle shade variations, and slight misalignments where the separate embroidered panels were stitched together.

A Suzani can be mounted as a fabric wall hanging above a bed or sideboard, draped across the back of a sofa, or utilised as a bed coverlet.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, store it rolled around acid-free tissue and cardboard tubes, and consult a professional textile conservator for cleaning.
