Antique Uzbek Suzani, Silk Embroidery on a Yellow Cotton Ground, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 7ft 5in x 6ft 5in (225 x 195cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani, silk on a yellow cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This suzani is beautifully embroidered in silk of a yellow cotton ground, the design has a central medallion surrounded by floral designs. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan, Shahrisabz region. The suzani would have been used as a cover for a bed or wall hanging.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and a few small historic repairs and spots of staining. The suzani has not been backed.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0320.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a traditional hand-embroidered textile crafted in Uzbekistan and Central Asia, historically made as part of a brides dowry to decorate living spaces.

Traditional suzanis are crafted using silk thread embroidery worked onto narrow cotton or linen ground fabric strips, which are subsequently stitched together using couching and chain stitches.

Authentic pieces feature pieced fabric panels, natural vegetable dyes displaying subtle colour variations, hand-stitched silk threads, and traditional Central Asian motifs such as circular floral medallions.

A suzani can be mounted as a focal wall hanging above a bed or sideboard, draped across upholstered seating, or utilised as a bedcover to add texture and historical pattern.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to protect natural dyes from fading, ensure proper weight distribution when mounted, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized dry cleaning.
