Size: 4ft 10inx 4ft 2in (147 x 128m) excluding tassels.

Antique Uzbek Lakai tribal ceremonial horse / saddle cover.

Circa 1920.

This beautiful embroidered horse / saddle cover was made by the Lakai tribe of Uzbekistan, it was used on special occasions such as weddings. The black felted wool field is covered in silk embroidery with classic Lakai designs.

The cover is in outstanding condition with very little wear, the cotton lining was replaced in Kabul in 2005.

Lakai embroidered textiles originated among the semi-nomadic Lakai Uzbek tribe in Central Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftswomen created decorated horse trappings, saddle covers, and domestic hangings for ceremonial occasions, wedlock dowries, and tribal prestige, characterised by bold graphic patterns and vibrant silk threadwork.

These textiles were typically constructed using silk embroidery threads stitched onto a dark wool, felt, or cotton foundation cloth. Techniques included chain stitch and cross-stitch, frequently finished with woven borders or hand-tied fringe edging along the perimeter.

Authentic period pieces feature irregularities in hand-spun foundation fabrics, natural vegetable-dyed silk threads displaying subtle colour variations (abrash), and traditional tribal motifs such as the boteh or stylized ram horn symbols. Machine stitching or synthetic dye bleeding indicates modern reproductions.
