Victorian silver butter dishes became popular during the 19th century as dining etiquette evolved and specialised silverware was manufactured for every course of a formal meal.

These items typically combine sterling silver or silver plate with hand-cut lead crystal or pressed glass inserts, designed to hold dairy products safely without reacting to the metal.

Authenticity is verified through hallmarks stamped on the metal, indicating the maker, assay office, and year of manufacture, alongside traditional casting and hand-cutting techniques on the glass.

Antique silver pieces can be incorporated into modern table settings as functional serveware or displayed on open shelving and sideboards to introduce reflective metallic textures.

Antique silver should be washed gently with mild, phosphate-free soap and warm water, then dried thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive dips that can damage the finish.
