Victorian ruby and cranberry glass refers to decorative and functional glassware coloured by the addition of gold chloride or copper to the molten batch, achieving rich red hues highly favoured during the nineteenth century.

Pieces were typically hand-blown into moulds or free-blown, then decorated using copper-wheel engraving techniques by skilled artisans to create frosted, tactile surface motifs.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing, minor surface wear consistent with age, hand-cut facets, and slight weight variations compared to modern machine-made glass.

Place the piece on a sideboard or within a drinks cabinet where natural or artificial light can pass through the translucent glass, highlighting its rich colour and intricate surface engraving.

Wash antique glass by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent; avoid soaking, sudden temperature changes, and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface and any engraved details.
