Art Deco 2 handled Champagne or Wine Cooler in Silver plate by WMF. In this the 100th birthday of Art Deco a stunning Art Deco silver plate piece by WMF. The top decorated with a repeating, repoussee Celtic Knot design linked by single diamond shapes. The top flares gently outward and is underlined with three lines. Marked to base WMF with Ostrich mark with a G and OX I/O and R. German c 1920. In good used condition – light wear to the underside of the cooler.

Art Deco was named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. It was the successor to and a reaction against art nouveau. Seen in furniture, pottery, textiles, jewellery, and glass it was also a notable style of cinema and hotel architecture.
Its chief difference from art nouveau is the influence of cubism which gives art deco design generally a more fragmented, geometric character. However, imagery based... on plant forms, and sinuous curves remained in some art deco design, for example that of Clarice Cliff.
Art deco also varied in its influences, taking inspiration from ancient Egyptian art, Aztec and other ancient Central American art. It also drew on the modern architecture and design of the Bauhaus, and of architects such as Le Corbusier and Mies van de Rohe.
