FAQs

Soup tureens evolved as centrepieces for formal dining tables during the 18th and 19th centuries, serving both functional and decorative purposes in wealthy households.

These items were typically manufactured from a base metal such as copper, brass, or Britannia metal, which was then coated using silver plating techniques like electroplating.

Authenticity is determined by examining makers marks, hallmarks, weight, cast figural mounts, and natural signs of historical wear on the silver plate.

An antique tureen functions effectively as a standalone decorative centrepiece on a dining table, sideboard, or open shelving unit to add metallic contrast.

Silver plate should be cleaned using non-abrasive microfibre cloths and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals and excessive scrubbing to preserve the plating.
