Opaline glass is a type of semi-opaque glass that gained immense popularity in France during the 19th century, particularly from the Restoration period through the Napoleon III era. It was crafted in various pastel and saturated colours to mimic porcelain and was frequently used for luxury vanity items.

These pieces are crafted from mouth-blown opaline glass, often featuring hand-painted enamel details or gilded bronze mounts and hinges. The manufacturing process required precise mineral oxides to achieve the signature opaque colouration.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-finished pontil marks on the base, heavy brass or gilt mounts with period-appropriate hinges, and slight weight variations due to manual blowing techniques. The glass should have a dense, creamy opacity rather than uniform modern transparency.

This piece works effectively as an accent object on a dressing table, mantelpiece, or bedside table, adding a touch of historical colour and metallic contrast to modern minimalist or classic interiors.

Clean the glass gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemical detergents. Avoid submerging metal-mounted pieces in water to protect the integrity of the vintage hinge and any surface gilding.
