Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Scottish pine kist blanket box dates from the 19th century and exemplifies the Scottish country style suited to a highland hunting lodge. The piece is constructed from pine and iron, finished in a reddish-brown colour with a painted panel stringing motif, a plinth base, iron drop handles, and a hinged lid. Visible details include painted panel border decoration and iron side handles. The kist measures 59 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, providing generous storage capacity. In a modern interior, this chest serves as practical storage at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or as a coffee table in a living room, keeping blankets, linens, and everyday items neatly out of sight while adding traditional character to the space.

FAQs

A kist is the traditional Scottish name for a heavy wooden trunk or storage chest, typically crafted from local pine or oak. Historically used in Scottish homes to store household textiles, clothing, or grain, these functional items are characterised by simple joinery, sturdy carrying handles, and flat hinged tops.

Pine kists were primarily constructed using slow-grown European pine or Scots pine boards held together with dovetail or rebate joints. Key fittings, such as side carrying handles, escutcheons, and hinges, were forged from wrought iron.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail jointing, natural timber shrinkage gaps around the base and top, and original wrought iron side handles. Look for historic surface wear, keyhole escutcheons, and early varnish, paint, or stain finishes on the pine surfaces.

A pine kist can serve as a central coffee table in a living room, positioned at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or placed in an entryway as a bench and shoe storage unit. Its timber tones work well alongside textured wools, neutral linens, and modern upholstery.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the surface finish. Keep the chest away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent the wood from warping or shrinking.
