FAQs

A deceptive whisky tumbler is a type of novelty drinking vessel from the 19th century featuring an unusually thick, solid glass base that makes the interior capacity appear much larger than it actually is. They were often used as practical jokes or in trick drinking games during social gatherings.

These items were typically hand-blown or mould-blown using lead crystal or soda-lime glass. The heavy bases were deliberately crafted with thick glass walls and often finished with cut or panelled detailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics of 19th-century manufacturing, such as pontil marks on the underside, minor surface abrasions, tiny trapped air bubbles within the glass, and hand-cut or pressed facets that differ from modern machine-made reproductions.

Antique glassware can be displayed on open shelving, within glass-front cabinets, or utilised as functional barware on a drinks trolley, adding historical texture and conversational interest to contemporary schemes.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock and damage to the fragile surface.
