Size: 8ft 9in x 4ft 8in (267 x 141cm).
Antique Baluch rug probably from Western Afghanistan. A Baluch rug with a scarce repeat ''star in octagon'' design.
Circa 1880.
A very interesting Baluch rug with a what appears to be a simple design, but upon study is a complex lattice used to great effect, there are 18 rows of 8 ''star in octagon'' designs, giving a total of 144, the inside of each octagon is quartered. The octagons are separated by rows of small diamond shaped secondary devices. The colour palette is restricted to madder red, indigo blue, aubergine and ivory; the aubergine is used as the ground colour for the leaf border and also to the field of the rug.
The rug is in fair condition with some wear and medium / low pile. The rug has very good soft wool and superb colour, there is some corrosion. The sides have been re-bound at some time in the rugs life.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
