Antique Afghan Bahluli Baluch rug with a repeat gul design.
Circa 1880.
Bahluli Baluch rugs are fairly scarce and originate from the borders of Western Afghanistan and the Khorasan region of eastern Persia. This example has a repeat Turkmen inspired gul design in rows of three, with a smaller minor gul between each row. The rug is woven in various shades of madder red on a dark indigo blue ground. The border designs reflect the design of the main field with subtle colour variations.
The rug is in good condition with some wear and medium / low pile, there is a narrow band of heavy wear across the middle of the rug that can be seen in the close up images. The rug retains the original kilims at both ends, these are slightly ragged.
The rug is suitable for light domestic use.
