Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, and shipped from the port of Imari. It originated during the Edo period in the early 17th century, becoming immensely popular in Europe for its striking colour palette.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from fine-paste porcelain and is characterised by a distinct tripartite colour palette consisting of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red (orange-red), and white, frequently highlighted with rich gilt detailing.

Authentic antique pieces typically display hand-painted decoration with slight irregularities, dense floral or brocade motifs, unglazed foot rims, and often bear spur marks or hand-written provenance or maker marks on the underside.

These decorative plates can be mounted on walls using plate hangers, displayed individually on specialised stands within open shelving, or arranged as centrepieces on wooden surfaces to introduce pattern and history.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned strictly by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent when necessary, avoiding the dishwasher entirely to protect the overglaze enamels and fragile gold gilt.
