A sugar caster, also known as a sugar shaker or dredger, is a perforate-lidded vessel traditionally used for sprinkling powdered or caster sugar onto desserts, pastries, and fruits. Emerging in popularity during the late 17th century, these items became staple fixtures on formal dining tables throughout the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras.

Authentic period casters are predominantly crafted from sterling silver, manufactured using techniques such as spinning, casting, and hand-piercing. The lids feature intricate pierced or fretwork patterns designed to distribute sugar evenly, often secured with a bayonet fitting or threaded collar.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically indicate the makers mark (such as William Comyns), the assay office, the standard of silver (such as the lion passant for sterling), and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

In a contemporary interior, an antique silver caster can be displayed prominently on an open kitchen shelf, a dining sideboard, or within a glass-fronted cabinet to add a reflective metallic accent and historical texture to the scheme.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish to maintain its natural patina, avoiding harsh dips that can strip the recessed details. It is best stored in a tarnish-resistant cloth or dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity.
