Pair of Solid Silver Pheasant Peppers

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a fabulous pair of solid silver peppers, very realistically modelled as pheasants.

They are German, with Hanau marks, and I would think date from the 1920s. They stand securely. The pepper holes are in the heads which pull off to fill the body cavity. The silver work is beautiful.

The last picture shows them in place on a dining table, complete with a pair of Georgian salts, a Victorian Claret Jug and one of a pair of Georgian bottle coasters, all currently in stock (but not included in this sale).

Dimensions:

Length: 14cm

Width: 2.5cm

Height: 6cm

Total Silver Weight: 100g.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Zoomorphic silver items, shaped like animals or birds, became widely popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Silversmiths created detailed realistic models of game birds, wildlife, and domestic animals to serve as functional table condiments and decorative conversation pieces.

These pieces are typically created using investment casting techniques to capture intricate surface details like plumage, followed by hand-chasing. The heads or tails usually unfasten via friction joints or screw threads to allow filling with ground pepper, with fine perforations placed subtly around the head.

Authentic solid silver pieces carry official assay hallmarks indicating purity, maker, town mark, and date letter, often stamped on the underside of the body or tail feather. Weight is another indicator, as solid cast silver feels substantial compared to hollow silver-plated alternatives.

Position them as decorative accents on a formal dining table, sideboard, or tray alongside crystal glassware and linen napery. They complement traditional English country style, rustic dining tables, and equestrian or country sports-themed interiors.

Clean silver condiments regularly with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth or specialized cream to prevent tarnish build-up. Because salt and pepper can accelerate metal oxidisation, internal surfaces should be emptied, washed, and dried thoroughly before long-term storage.
