During the 18th century, glass bottles transitioned from bulbous shapes to taller, more cylindrical forms designed to withstand the internal pressures of sparkling wine and to allow for horizontal stacking in cellars.

These pieces were typically mouth-blown using heavy forest glass or black glass, often containing impurities and air bubbles due to primitive manufacturing processes and coal-fired furnaces.

Authentic specimens feature distinct characteristics such as a rough pontil mark on the base, uneven wall thickness, asymmetrical shapes, and characteristic surface iridescence caused by centuries of chemical weathering in the soil.

Such objects can be displayed individually on a mantelpiece or grouped in a window alcove to highlight the natural light passing through the patinated glass.

Preservation involves gentle cleaning with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical treatments that might damage the fragile iridescent surface layer resulting from prolonged burial.
