Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

An oak coffer is a traditional storage chest that dates back to medieval times, evolving through the 17th and 18th centuries primarily for storing valuables, linens, and documents before the widespread use of wardrobes and chest of drawers.

Authentic period coffers are constructed from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed panels, and pegged construction, frequently featuring hand-carved ornamentation on the front facade.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joints, iron wrought hinges, natural timber oxidisation, tool marks consistent with period hand-working, and timber shrinkage patterns that develop over centuries of aging.

An antique coffer provides practical storage while serving as a focal point when placed at the foot of a bed, used as a coffee table, or positioned in a hallway to contrast cleanly against minimalist modern architectural backgrounds.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the finish.
