French ormolu, or gilded bronze, became highly prominent during the 19th century, drawing inspiration from earlier royal periods like Louis XIV and Louis XVI to create opulent, finely cast decorative items.

These pieces typically combine fire-gilded or ormulu-mounted cast brass frames with thick, heavy bevelled glass panels, often featuring internal velvet or silk cushions to protect delicate contents.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut, thick bevelled glass with natural edge variations, patinated ormulu bronze mounts showing age-appropriate wear, and traditional pin or barrel hinges rather than modern screws.

Placed atop a dressing table, mantelpiece, or console table, these caskets add metallic warmth and historical texture, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist or maximalist design schemes alike.

Clean glass panels gently with a soft microfiber cloth and mild glass cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals on the ormolu mountings to preserve the original gilt surface and natural oxidisation.
