Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An epergne is a multi-tiered table centrepiece that originated in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the Victorian era. Designed to hold flowers, fruit, or sweetmeats, these decorative structures traditionally feature a central tall vase surrounded by supporting bowls or arms.

Victorian epergnes were frequently constructed using silver-plate, sterling silver, or hand-carved hardwoods such as walnut or Linden wood for the base. These bases were fitted with hand-blown, cut, etched, or frosted lead crystal flutes and shallow glass dishes.

Authentic 19th-century epergnes feature crisp hand-carving or precision metalwork alongside hand-etched glass components. Look for age-appropriate surface wear, natural patination on wood or metal collars, and slight irregularities in the hand-blown glass elements.

A carved epergne functions well as a focal point on a formal dining table, console, or sideboard. The contrast between dark carved wood and transparent glass complements both traditional dining settings and contemporary spaces requiring a tactile antique element.

Carefully separate the glass components from the base and clean them by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Dust the carved wooden base gently with a soft dry brush to reach internal recesses, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax to preserve the timber finish.
