Description

You don't see very many of these collectable small cupboards....this one has come out of a Somerset Watermill and was used to keep valuable deeds and documents in, it was probably inset into the wall, so no one could walk off with the cupboard and its contents...it dates from around 1740 and has "joyned" peg construction, attractive carved and punchwork cornice, original handmade hinges and still retains the original drop handles....excellent colour and condition.

English. C1740-60.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Joined furniture from this period refers to pieces constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, predating widespread industrial manufacturing.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid quarter-sawn English oak, frequently fitted with hand-wrought iron hinges, latches, and brass key escutcheons.

Authenticity is assessed through surface patination, tool marks from hand-cleaving and adzing, hand-cut joinery, and appropriate shrinkage or wear consistent with age.

Pairing dark, historic wood with neutral plaster walls and minimalist contemporary furnishings creates a balanced scheme that highlights the natural texture of the timber.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood surface.
