A firing glass is a small, heavy-based drinking vessel popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, specifically designed for toasting. The thick, reinforced foot produced a sharp cracking sound resembling a musket fire when slammed onto a wooden table, earning it the term firing.

These pieces were typically hand-blown using lead glass or flint glass, characterised by a thick foot, a short stem, and a conical bowl. The high lead content provides a distinctive ring and clarity, while the heavy base was engineered to withstand the impact of being struck against tables.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate manufacturing characteristics such as pontil marks on the underside of the base, internal bubbles, striations within the glass, and surface wear consistent with age. The weight distribution and hand-formed contours also differ significantly from modern machine-pressed glass.

These small glassware items integrate well into traditional and eclectic displays by being housed within glass-fronted cabinets, displayed on open shelving, or styled on sideboards as part of a curated collection of historic objects.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasives, and dishwashers. Drying with a lint-free cloth helps prevent water spots and protects the fragile historic surfaces.
