Georgian Silver Black Dot Paste Pendant

18th century
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

This large antique pendant started out as a different piece of Georgian jewellery, possibly a hat pin or button, and has at some time been converted to a very wearable piece with a gold bail which can be hung on a chain or ribbon.

The pendant is solid silver, set with beautiful sparkling old foil-backed black dot pastes, mainly lovely cushion cuts. The Georgians (c.1714-1837) would paint a black dot on the bottom end of paste stones (the culet) to help give an illusion of depth and make them look more like real diamonds as they glittered in the candlelight.

In very good antique condition, with a little wear and tiny nicks to some of the stones when seen under magnification.

Size: Approximately 2.6cm, 3cm total length including the bail.

Weight: 5.8g.

We currently have a number of lovely Georgian pieces just in (see final photo) which are being added to the shop, see our other listings for more details :)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black dot paste jewellery refers to high-lead content glass gems created during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, featuring a small hand-painted black dot on the culet to simulate the optical depth and open culet of diamonds.

These ornaments were produced with hand-cut glass stones secured in closed-back silver settings, lined with metallic foil to reflect light, and finished with gold suspension loops or pin fittings.

Authentic items exhibit closed metal backings, irregular hand-cut facets, subtle surface wear consistent with age, dark oxidation surrounding the crimped settings, and painted culet dots.

A Georgian pendant can be suspended from a contemporary gold or silver chain for modern wear, or mounted inside a velvet-lined glazed frame as a historical display piece.

Avoid contact with water, liquid cleaners, or high humidity, as moisture can breach the closed settings and tarnish the interior metallic foil backing; clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
