FAQs

Victorian mustard pots evolved as part of larger dining table cruet sets during the 19th century, reflecting the eras elaborate dining customs and advancements in silver manufacturing.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as piercing, repousse, and casting, frequently featuring a fitted blue glass liner to protect the metal from corrosive mustard.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, such as Chester or London, alongside a date letter, makers mark, and the lion passant denoting sterling silver purity.

Such pieces function well as small decorative tabletop accessories, displayed on sideboards or within glass-fronted cabinets to add historical texture and metallic sheen to contemporary spaces.

Care requires occasional gentle cleaning with a specialised silver cloth or non-abrasive polish to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage historical patination and hallmarks.
