Description

A superb rare Dutch solid sterling silver serving combination folding fork and toothpick. It is hallmarked for with Dutch marks and import marks for London 1893. It has been superbly designed being folding, the band slides to hold the tines in place, with a screw-in tooth pick to its end. It is in superb condition having no dings splits and distortions, (the tines may have old repairs but it may have been made this way as it would be very difficult to cast tines). It measures approx. 6 inches (15cms) long and weighs 37 grams. A very unusual rare piece.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Antique Silver Folding Fork to the 1890s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Folding travelling cutlery became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as wealthy travellers, diplomats, and gentlemen preferred to carry their own personal, hygienic eating utensils for journeys and dining out.

These items were typically crafted from solid silver, often featuring intricate hand-engraved scrolling patterns, chased details, and functional folding or sliding mechanisms stamped with official assay hallmarks.

Authenticity is determined by examining makers marks, regional Dutch silver assay marks indicating fineness and date letters, the natural patina of the metal, and the precision of the mechanical hinges.

These small collectable items can be displayed within glass table vitrines, in specialised shadow boxes, or on a collectors cabinet shelf to highlight their intricate craftsmanship.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive, high-quality silver cloth to preserve the historic dark oxidisation in the recessed crevices while maintaining a polished surface on the raised areas.
