This large and impressive Late 18th Century Antique Dutch Delftware Polychrome Vase and Cover of octagonal form was produced Circa 1775 and stands 47.00 cm. / 18.50 inches high. The decoration, in soft shades of blue, green, yellow ochre and aubergine depicts, on the obverse, a regal figure whom we believe to represent King Henri IV of France, attired in a suit of armour. The sides and reverse are naively painted with sprays of flowers, while the cover is surmounted by a finial in the form of a bird pecking a plum. The underside of the base bears an underglaze blue painted mark formed of the initials C.B. surmounted by a crown and a cross. This mark was, until recently, attributed to the Early 18th Century Brussels atelier of Corneille Mombaers and Thierry Witsenburg, but current scholarship has, so we understand, declared against this.
