Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass, contains trace amounts of uranium dioxide added as a colourant, which causes the glass to fluoresce under ultraviolet light. It was produced in large quantities during the Victorian era, particularly from the mid to late nineteenth century.

These items were crafted from soda-lime or lead glass infused with uranium salts for the characteristic yellow-green tint. They were typically produced using pressed glass techniques or hand-blown methods involving moulds to create symmetrical fluted patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit a distinctive transparent yellow-green hue and will glow a vibrant neon green when exposed to a 365nm or 395nm ultraviolet light source due to the presence of uranium. Additionally, period items often display pontil marks, minor surface imperfections, or mould seams consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

These objects can be displayed within illuminated glass-front cabinets or styled on open shelving to capture natural light, highlighting their translucent colour. They also function effectively as decorative tabletop accents when paired with neutral or contrasting dark surfaces.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent to prevent surface scratching and chemical damage. Avoid sudden temperature changes and never place these items in a dishwasher.
