Description

A particularly nice example of a 19th century micromosaic in the form of an embellished Maltese cross set with tiny glass tiles or tesserae.

Micromosaic jewellery became popular in Victorian times, during the early to mid-19th century, when it became the thing to do for wealthy people to conduct The Grand Tour - a cultural trip around Europe, collecting souvenirs along the way. Italy was a popular destination for its rich cultural and artistic heritage and its high-quality glass production. Italian workshops became adept at producing micromosaic artworks and jewellery for aristocratic tourists.

The mosaic depicts tiny white flowers around a staurogram - a cross formed of P and a T (although it looks more like an I here). Also known as Tau-rho or a monogrammatic cross, the staurogram is an ancient symbol which went on to be used as a an abbreviation for the name Jesus Christ.

The mosaic is in good solid condition with no major losses, please see photos. There are one or two tiny indents in the silver on the reverse and a slight golden sheen where the cross would originally have been gilded.

There are no hallmarks, as is commonly the case with these pieces, but it has been tested to confirm it is solid silver.

Size: Approximately 2.7 x 2.7cm.

Weight: 3.7g.

An antique pendant can be worn as a focal point on a simple fine silver chain, allowing the intricate craftsmanship and historical narrative to stand out against contemporary clothing.

Micro mosaics should be stored away from moisture and direct sunlight, cleaned gently with a dry soft brush, and protected from impact to prevent the loss of fragile glass tesserae.

Authentic pieces can be identified by the irregular size of the hand-cut glass tesserae, visible grout lines under magnification, and the presence of period-appropriate metalwork findings on the reverse.

These pieces typically utilise microscopic opaque coloured glass rods known as smalti, melted and pulled into threads before being cut into tiny tiles and set into a base of metal, frequently silver or brass.

Micro mosaic jewellery gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly as souvenirs for travellers undertaking the Grand Tour of Italy, featuring intricate designs assembled from tiny glass tesserae.
