An original small coaching travelling trunk from the first half of the 19th Century.
The wooden structure is covered with canvas treated to give a kind of modern rain repellent look. These types of luggage were travelling outside and needed that kind of extra protection.
A removable compartment as well all the internal are still lined with the original paper and linen.
Original handles, lock and clasp, no key.
Made by the highly regarded company William Insall of Bristol, as per their printed label inside the lid.
Insall produced superb luggage which is rare to find. While established in 1829 at St Augustine’s Parade in Bristol, the first record of a John Insall in Bristol was in 1796.
Wear and tear commensurate with travelling use and age.
