Description

Fine quality, large, early 19th century single three branch French classical candelabra with a figural bronze of probably one of the Nymphs of Calypso, based on François Fénelon’s 'The Adventures of Telemachus' published in 1699 and painted by Angelica Kauffmann in 1782. Beautiful bronze holding a garland of flowers standing against a column culminating in three individually designed floral candle cups and a stylised fir cone finial. Rich untouched patination with spots of verdigris. Presented on a superb, very attractive Giallo Antico marble column base with a classically inspired bronze beaded ring and architrave. Fine example, circa 1830.

FAQs

A figural candelabrum incorporates sculptural human or mythological figures into its design, functioning both as a decorative art object and a multi-branched lighting device.

These pieces typically combine cast and chased bronze, often with patinated or gilt finishes, mounted on architectural plinths made of decorative stones such as marble or porphyry.

Authenticity is assessed through the quality of the casting, hand-chasing detail, natural patination and oxidisation of the metal, and the construction methods used to join the structural components.

Placed on a mantelpiece or sideboard, a sculptural candelabrum acts as a strong focal point, contrasting effectively against minimalist architecture or complementing traditional period rooms.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft dry cloth without abrasive polishes to preserve the patina, while marble bases can be wiped with a damp cloth and mild neutral soap if required.
