Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Root carving is a traditional Chinese folk art that utilizes the natural shapes of tree roots, gnarled branches, and stumps to create expressive sculptures. Reaching widespread popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties, artisans carefully carved figures, animals, and scholar objects while preserving the natural contours of the wood.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense native hardwoods such as boxwood, camphor, pear wood, and various native tree roots. These dense timbers allowed for fine detail in facial expressions and drapery folds, while holding up well to detailed hand carving and polished wax finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, smooth wear on raised edges from historic handling, and natural oxidisation within deeper carved recesses. Additionally, original carvings fitted as lamps often show evidence of mid-twentieth-century electrical conversions, such as drilled wiring channels through older timber bases.

A carved root wood lamp serves as an organic sculptural focal point when placed on a contemporary sideboard, marble console, or dark wood desk. Pair the base with a simple linen or silk shade in warm cream tones to balance the detailed craftsmanship and natural dark wood patina.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, and placement near direct heat sources or prolonged sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and cracking; apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once a year to preserve the lustre.
