This pair of antique sweet stands originates from the Victorian period in 1910, rendered in gleaming sterling silver with a reflective silver colour. Each piece takes a boat-shaped navette form supported by a circular pedestal base, featuring intricate pierced openwork decoration along the scalloped borders and the matching feet. Graceful scroll terminals sweep upward at either end to form decorative handles, while beaded moulding outlines the rims and foot edges. Polished bowls sit centrally upon the turned stems, presenting smooth reflective surfaces contrasted against the open lattice pattern. The dimensions measure 13 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 13 cm deep for each dish. Position these stands upon a sideboard top or dining table in a home setting to hold sweetmeats, bonbons, or small fruits during formal gatherings and dinner parties. The matching pair provides balanced symmetry for display cabinets or serving surfaces, bringing traditional silverware into contemporary entertaining spaces. Each pedestal design elevates the contents above the surface, offering clear visibility of the pierced metalwork from all angles in a dining room or living area.

Sweetmeat stands, also known as bonbon dishes or comports, were introduced in the seventeenth century to serve candied fruits, nuts, and small sweet treats during the dessert course of formal dinners. Over time, their design evolved to incorporate delicate pierced patterns and elevated pedestal bases.

These vessels were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, utilising techniques such as hand-piercing, repousse, casting, and chasing. Pierced lattice work and chased borders were especially popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Authentic silver pieces generally display stamped hallmarks indicating the silver purity, makers mark, assay office, and date letter. Additionally, hand-finished piercing and subtle hand-tooling marks consistent with period manufacturing methods distinguish genuine antique examples from modern cast reproductions.

These versatile pieces can be displayed as decorative accents on a sideboard, console table, or dining table centre. They can function as catch-all dishes for small items in an entryway or be left unadorned as sculptured metalwork.

Antique silver should be gently washed in warm water with mild dish soap and dried immediately with a soft cotton cloth. Regular light buffing with a specialised silver polishing cloth helps prevent tarnish build-up without stripping delicate surface detail.
