Description

A beautiful and very impressive antique Victorian mahogany breakfront bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

It is of superb quality and has lovely proportions. It is large and impressive, yet elegant with refined features. The doors on the upper and lower sides are quite narrow, there is adjustable shelving in the top cabinet and further shelving in the lower cabinet. There is beautiful carving throughout on the borders of the paneled doors, the cornice, the arched and pierced pediment, even on the beautifully shaped bracket feet. There is fantastic astral glazing on the doors of the upper section, and it is lined with a gorgeous patterned fabric.

This has been recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with some minor wear remaining beneath the polish. The mahogany has acquired a wonderful colour tone and patina.

This comes apart in two main sections for ease of transport, and the pediment can also be removed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian breakfront bookcases typically feature substantial proportions, rich dark wood grains, and classical architectural influences such as carved pediments and glazed lattice doors.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary woods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and individually glazed window panes.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction markers such as hand-sawn timber marks, old glass with subtle imperfections, traditional shellac finishes, and period joinery without modern metal screws.

Pairing a dark wood antique bookcase with minimalist modern furniture creates a sophisticated contrast, while lining the interior with patterned wallpaper adds a layer of depth and texture.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth or a traditional beeswax polish.
