Victorian footstools became popular in the 19th century as domestic comfort increased, often featuring handcrafted needlepoint or wool embroidery reflecting the eras fascination with domestic arts and floral motifs.

These pieces typically feature a solid hardwood frame, such as mahogany or walnut, upholstered with wool needlepoint or Berlin wool work over traditional stuffing and webbing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-carved details of the wooden legs, the type of joinery used, the hand-stitched nature of the wool needlework, and natural signs of age and wear on the wood finish.

These low stools serve as functional accent pieces in living rooms or studies, placed near armchairs or fireplaces to add historical texture and colour to modern schemes.

Preservation involves keeping the wool out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, gently vacuuming with a low suction attachment through a mesh screen, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the antique wood.
