Late Victorian Hukin & Heath Sterling Silver Claret Jug

1900 - 1920
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a late Victorian cut glass and hallmarked sterling silver claret jug. It was assayed in Birmingham in 1896. It was made by Hukin & Heath (John Thomas Heath & John Hartshorne Middleton).

The silver hinged lid has a spherical reeded handle. Inside the lid it has hallmarks and an inscription 'Presented to Major General A. McGill C.B., C.B.E. on Retirement 1969'. It also has stamped numbers '11401' and '2'. The side has further hallmarks and there is a silver spout.

The glass body has a hand blown loop handle and a diamond cut to the sides, with a star cut base.

The glass has a few small nibbles and chips to the raised areas of the decoration as you would expect from an item of its age but otherwise it is in good general order.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian claret jug is a specialised vessel created during the nineteenth century specifically for decanting and serving red wines, particularly Bordeaux, known in Britain as claret.

These vessels were typically crafted using a hand-blown or lead crystal glass body paired with solid sterling silver or silver-plated collar mounts, spouts, hinges, and handles.

Authentic pieces generally display official British silver hallmarks stamped into the metal mounts, indicating the makers mark, purity mark, town mark, and date letter.

A silver claret jug can be positioned on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or styled atop a drinks trolley alongside glass barware.

Clean the glass interior using warm water and specialised decanter cleaning beads, while wiping the silver mounts gently with a silver polishing cloth to avoid harsh chemical runoff onto the glass joints.
