FAQs

Silver sauce tureens gained popularity during the 18th century as dining customs shifted towards elaborate, multi-course meals served in the French style. They were specifically designed to keep sauces warm at the centre of the dining table.

Traditional pieces were typically crafted from sterling or hallmarked silver, often utilizing techniques such as silversmith casting, hand-hammering, chasing, and repousse to create decorative motifs.

Authenticity is generally verified through hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the maker, the assay office, the purity standard, and the year of manufacture. Hand-finished details and natural age-related tarnishing also help confirm period origin.

These pieces can be displayed as striking decorative accents on a sideboard or dining table, reflecting light and adding a layer of historical contrast to contemporary minimalist or transitional spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using specialized, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to protect the patina and delicate chasing. Store them in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight to minimise oxidation.
