Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian spirit kettle dates from 1900 and comes in the English Country House style. The piece consists of a silver-plated kettle resting on a decorative tripod stand with an alcohol burner, an ebony overhead handle, a lidded finial, a Greek key border around the stand band, and shell-shaped feet. The kettle presents a polished silver finish with a contrasting dark wooden handle and a warm brass-coloured mounting on the top arch. The vessel measures 21 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. The kettle sits comfortably on top of a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or entrance hall to bring a traditional touch to interior spaces today. In a domestic setting, the piece functions well as a decorative display object on a wooden surface, complementing traditional furniture arrangements. The stand holds the central burner directly underneath the base kettle, while the overhead handle arches upwards for lifting. The craftsmanship includes detailed scrolling work on the legs and classical Greek key patterning around the perimeter of the stand frame. The combination of reflective silver plate and dark ebony creates a balanced visual contrast for use in a period or transitional interior scheme.

FAQs

A spirit kettle is a table teapot mounted on a stand with an integrated burner beneath, designed to keep water hot for tea service without requiring a stove. Popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, they formed an integral part of formal afternoon tea sets.

Edwardian spirit kettles were predominantly constructed from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver, often featuring heat-resistant handles made from ebony, fruitwood, or woven cane. The stands featured cast legs and fitted alcohol burners.

Authentic Edwardian silver plated kettles feature makers marks or EPNS stamps pressed into the underside of the vessel or stand. Construction details include hand-pinned hinges, turned wooden handles, and period decorative motifs like Greek key or gadrooned borders.

Place the spirit kettle on a dining room sideboard, kitchen dresser, or tray table as a classic decorative accent. It serves as a striking focal piece within a traditional sideboard arrangement alongside glassware or ceramics.

Polish silver plate gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners that can strip the silver layer. Ensure wood or ebony elements are kept dry during cleaning to prevent splitting or degradation.
