Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Jacobean Revival footstool exemplifies English Country House style through its traditional construction. The piece combines a rich brown oak frame with cream linen upholstery, complete with brass castors on the feet, carved corner blocks, and shaped stretchers linking the four barley twist legs. The vintage fabric shows a tight plain weave, while the dark timber exhibits a warm polished finish with subtle surface variations. Measuring 45 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, the stool functions effectively at the foot of the bed or as additional seating in a living space. The low profile and supportive padded top provide a comfortable surface for resting feet or placing casually beside a fireside chair.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century barley twist stools typically feature spiral-turned legs and carved stretchers inspired by 17th-century Jacobean furniture. These pieces were crafted to serve as low accent seating or footrests in Victorian interiors.

These stools were constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, held together with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Frames were upholstered in linen, horsehair padding, or wool tapestry, and supported on brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit slight natural asymmetries in the hand-turned spiral legs and expected wear on lower stretchers from foot contact. The underside should show historical timber shrinkage, antique screw fixings, and traditional hand-cut joinery.

A low carved footstool can be positioned near a hearth, at the end of a sofa, or at the foot of a bed. Neutral linen upholstery allows the dark, detailed woodwork to integrate with both contemporary and traditional interior schemes.

Dust the wood frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to protect the finish. Gently vacuum the fabric upholstery using a soft brush attachment and address spills immediately with a dry cloth.
