A Welsh clothes press of appealing small size in two sections. The striking, chequer-inlaid frieze sits below a broad cornice and the two doors have well shaped and fielded, ogee-arched upper panels flanked by fluted canted corners. The lower part contains a brushing slide above five drawers applied with old but later handles, on a shaped plinth. Made from dense, irregularly figured native oak, including the backboards and internal shelf, the drawer linings of ash, oak and pine. Teifi Valley, circa 1790-1810.
Literature:
See Welsh Furniture 1250-1950, by Richard Bebb, Volume two, page 81, fig. 790, which shows a clothes press from the Teifi Valley of similar scale and drawer arrangement, though lacking the brushing slide, decorative inlay and shaped door panels.
