Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Open oak bookcases gained prominence during the 19th and early 20th centuries as domestic libraries expanded and homeowners sought accessible storage for growing book collections. Crafted primarily from durable native timber, these pieces reflected a shift towards practical yet refined home organisation.

Traditional bookcases of this type are constructed from solid quarter-sawn or plain oak, frequently featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints or traditional housing joints. The timber is often finished with a wax or polish to highlight the natural grain and medullary rays.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining timber characteristics, tool marks, and construction joints. Period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery without modern metal fasteners, and natural ageing of the wood consistent with historical usage.

Pairing matching wooden bookcases creates symmetry and focal balance in a room. They can be styled with a curated mix of vertical book stacks, decorative objects, and ceramics, ensuring negative space is maintained to prevent visual clutter.

Antique oak should be kept away from direct sunlight and dramatic fluctuations in temperature and humidity to prevent splitting. Periodic treatment with a microcrystalline wax helps nourish the timber and protect the finish without sealing the pores.
