Sold 1 October 2025 · The Fancy Fox
This “Early Victorian Octagonal Silver Mustard Pot William Forrester 1839” found a buyer.

It was listed by The Fancy Fox. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A good early Victorian silver mustard pot of octaginal shape with stepped detail around the base and squared "7" shape handle with scrolled lower terminal, outer spur and upcurved thumb rest. Octagonal opening thumb catch and octagonal cartouche overlaid to the cover. Hand engraved symbolic devices to each panel and around the edge of the cover and the central cartouche engraved with a fletcher holding an arrow. Fitted with the likely original blue glass liner. Hallmarked for London 1839, maker William Forrester, partial marks inside the cover.

It measures 6.3cm (2 1/2") high to the thumb catch, 10.2cm (4") rim to handle and 7cm (2 3/4") wide. It weighs 266g in total with the liner, 142g / 4.6ozt silver weight.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair and the liner is good. Some minor handling wear mainly to the cover; the family crest of the fletcher is much more lightly engraved than the other decoration and would not have ever been as clear or crisp but it is a bit rubbed but still obvious what it represents. The hallmarks are pretty good apart from the latter edge of the makers mark. A score across the top of the handle.

Early Victorian silver refers to pieces manufactured during the initial decades of Queen Victorias reign, typically showcasing a blend of revived rococo and classical motifs combined with advancing industrial manufacturing techniques.

These items are generally fashioned from sterling silver, often created through a combination of hand-raising, casting for handles and hinges, and precision engraving or chasing for surface ornamentation.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining official assay office hallmarks, maker marks, date letters, and assessing the natural tarnish and wear patterns consistent with age.

Antique silver can be incorporated into modern settings by using them as functional accent pieces on dining tables, open shelving, or sideboards to add metallic contrast and historical texture.

Preservation involves storing pieces in tarnish-resistant cloths, minimising exposure to humidity and harsh chemicals, and cleaning infrequently using specialist non-abrasive silver polish.
