Victorian novelty napkin rings are silver or silver-plated table accessories crafted during the late nineteenth century featuring whimsical designs such as belt buckles, animals, or figures. Introduced to identify individual cloth napkins between washings, these pieces became popular decorative items for formal dining tables.

Antique silver-plated napkin rings were typically manufactured by electroplating a thin layer of fine silver onto a base metal core such as nickel silver or Britannia metal. Designs were shaped through stamping, casting, or chasing before receiving decorative hand-engraving and finishing.

Authentic pieces usually display maker marks or electroplate stamps such as EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) alongside late Victorian design characteristics. Original presentation cases lined with silk or velvet often feature manufacturer details embossed inside the lid.

Cased napkin rings can be displayed open on a sideboard or inside a glass cabinet to show the contrast between the silver finish and velvet lining. Alternatively, they can be integrated into contemporary tablescapes to add historical texture to modern table linen.

Silver-plated items should be cleaned gently using a soft cloth and a specialised mild silver polish to prevent wearing through the electroplated layer. Storing the pieces within their original fitted case helps minimise oxidisation and protects the metalwork from scratch damage.
