Description

A highly unusual Georgian solid sterling silver toast rack by the renowned Robert Hennell I.

The base carries the hallmarks for London 1789 and all separate pieces carry associated hallmarks except the two pins that hold the entire structure together.

An elegant boat shaped base with a crest. The horizontal racks fit neatly into their allotted spaces - some are slightly bent, probably as a result of being removed on a regular basis. It's a lot easier to clean than some others!

A Georgian solid sterling silver toast rack by maker Robert Hennell I bears London hallmarks for 1789 on the base, while associated hallmarks appear on the separate components. The silver object includes a footed oval frame with an elevated boat-like curved rim, a ring handle divider, and multiple removable wirework arches that slot into horizontal supports linked by four circular spacer motifs. Signs of age include slightly bent horizontal racks from regular use. The item measures 14 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Suitable for use on a dining table or sideboard top in an English country house setting, this antique toast rack holds slices of toast upright between its wire arches. The disassembled structure allows easy cleaning of both the boat-shaped base and the individual wire racks. The silver piece coordinates with traditional tableware and serves functional breakfast service duties in a modern dining room.

Toast racks were introduced in the mid-18th century to prevent toasted bread from becoming damp by allowing steam to escape between slices. During the Georgian period, silversmiths created these functional dining accessories with wirework dividers and raised bases.

Georgian toast racks were primarily constructed from sterling silver or fused Sheffield plate, featuring hand-formed wire arches, soldered joints, and raised bases with cast feet to protect table surfaces.

Authentic Georgian silver pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped onto the base frame or handle, including a makers mark, town mark, date letter, and sovereign head duty mark.

While originally intended for breakfast service on a dining table or sideboard, antique toast racks are frequently repurposed in modern homes as desktop stationery organisers or display holders for letters and cards.

Clean silver toast racks using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish designed to remove tarnish without wearing down detailed hallmarks or metal plating. Avoid harsh chemical baths and dishwasher cleaning.
