Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Stamped maker's mark Mappin & Webb Ltd: company name style adopted after 1898.
Sinuous Art Nouveau handle curves: styling typical of early twentieth-century metalware.
Fitted wire rack and matching tongs: intact three-piece set surviving together.
Fine surface scratches on the base: gentle handling over decades of use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian silver-plated asparagus serving dish originates from c.1910 and bears a maker's mark on the underside. The serveware comprises a rectangular tray base fitted with a wirework cradle rack, an overhead handle with curved terminal loops, and a pair of matching serving tongs resting across the grille. Finished in a polished silver colour throughout, the piece displays clean wirework construction, structured vertical supports on the rack, and distinct mouldings along the tray rim. The whole set measures 14 cm high, 27.3 cm wide, and 22.9 cm deep. In a modern home, this serving set suits placement upon a dining table or sideboard top for presenting asparagus during formal meals or traditional dinner parties. The silver-plated surface provides a bright reflective quality that complements other silverware on display. The integrated handle allows for straightforward transport between kitchen and dining spaces, while the included tongs provide a practical tool for serving portions directly from the rack. The Edwardian English Country House design integrates easily into traditional dining room schemes.

FAQs

Specialised asparagus servers gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as formal dining etiquette demanded dedicated hollowware for specific courses. These items allowed cooked asparagus to drain before serving.

Most pieces from this era feature electroplated nickel silver, known as EPNS, constructed with drawn wirework racks set into stamped base trays.

Look for maker stamps, EPNS marks, and period-specific design features such as geometric wirework, integrated handles, and matching sprung tongs.

Display the item as a decorative centrepiece on a sideboard or dining table, or use the tray independently to organise small items in a hallway or dressing area.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners or dishwashers that can wear down the delicate silver plating.
