Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This Victorian centrepiece bowl, dating from around 1880, consists of a silver-plated figural tripod stand supporting an original yellow and white opaline glass dish. The stand is constructed from silver-plated metal and features cast lion monopodia legs with paw feet, along with grotesque mythical masks, rope twist swags, and a torch flame finial. The opaline glass bowl presents a wavy rim and a smooth, glossy glaze. Practical sizing is indicated by dimensions of 13 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. Such a piece finds its natural home today upon a dining table as a centrepiece, or on a sideboard as a decorative accent bowl in a traditional or period interior. The design incorporates distinct Victorian and Gothic stylistic elements, combining metallic ornamentation with translucent glassware. The underside of the feet bears full maker marks from James Dixon and Sons, confirming its origins. The construction reveals sturdy casting work on the mounts and a balanced three-legged support structure underneath the round glass vessel.

FAQs

A Victorian silver plate centrepiece is a decorative dining table ornament crafted during the late nineteenth century, designed to display fruit, flowers, or sweetmeats as a focal point for formal entertaining.

These pieces typically combine electroplated nickel silver bases with hand-blown art glass, such as opaline, vaseline, or cranberry glass bowls supported by cast legs or pedestals.

Authentic James Dixon & Sons silver plate features stamped makers marks, often including the initials JD&S, a trumpet with a banner symbol, or specific pattern numbers impression-stamped into the underside of the metal base.

Place the centrepiece in the centre of a dining table, atop a sideboard, or on a hallway console to serve as a focal point, allowing light to highlight the translucent glass and reflective metalwork.

Hand-wash the glass bowl gently with warm water and mild soap, while using a soft cotton cloth with non-abrasive silver polish on the plated metalwork to prevent wear to the silver layer.
