This antique hip flask dates from the early 20th century, produced by the silversmith James Dixon. The piece combines a glass body with a textured brown leather upper sleeve, a vertical glass sight window on the front, and a lower silver-plated base section. Additional elements include a hinged silver-plated bayonet cap with a rounded top and a cork seal, alongside a threaded brass-toned collar marked with maker details. The leather shows light surface wear appropriate for its age, while the metal components maintain a polished finish. The flask measures 9 cm wide by 3 cm deep and 15 cm high, holding 1/4 of a pint. In a modern home, this piece works well displayed on a sideboard top in a study or library setting as a decorative tabletop accessory or a functional drinks gift.

Hip flasks emerged in their modern contoured form during the eighteenth century, gaining widespread popularity among the gentry during the Victorian era. Designed to curve against the body for discreet transport during field sports, they evolved into refined personal accessories crafted by notable silversmiths and metalworkers.

Traditional construction typically involved a glass or metal inner vessel encased in protective materials such as pigskin, morocco leather, or crocodile skin. The caps and removable drinking cups were commonly made of sterling silver or silver plate, featuring bayonet twist locks or screw-top closures.

Authentic period flasks often feature manufacturer hallmarks or makers marks, such as JD&S for James Dixon & Sons, stamped into the metal cap or collar. Look for details like bayonet-hinged caps, glass level indicator windows, and hand-stitched leather covers that exhibit natural age-related patina.

An antique hip flask serves as a refined accent piece when displayed on a wooden bar cart, vintage tray, or within a gentlemans library bookcase. Grouping it alongside period glassware, decanters, and leather-bound books enhances a classic, curated aesthetic.

Clean the silver-plated elements gently using a soft cloth and specialist silver polish, taking care to avoid contact with the leather sleeve. Keep the leather conditioned with a small amount of neutral leather cream, and ensure the interior vessel remains dry when stored to prevent corrosion.
