Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 19th-century provincial French bookcase is constructed from cherry wood with a warm honey colour and a visible patina. The two-tier design stands 204 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, and splits into two sections for installation. A moulded cornice surmounts the upper section, which contains a pair of six-pane glazed doors enclosing a patterned fabric lining and shelves. The base section features three small drawers fitted with brass bail handles above a central keyhole escutcheon, positioned over a pair of solid panelled lower cupboard doors fitted with brass keyhole plates. All doors are lockable with keys supplied, and the interior spaces offer lined and shelved storage. The surfaces show historic woodworm holes and other signs of age, contributing to its rustic character. It functions well as a display bookcase in a living room, or as a traditional dresser in a kitchen or dining space for storing tableware and books.

FAQs

A 19th-century French glazed bookcase, often constructed as a two-part cabinet or buffet deux corps, combines upper display shelving behind glass doors with lower storage drawers and cupboards, reflecting practical French provincial craftsmanship.

These pieces were typically constructed from native French hardwoods such as cherry wood, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise and tenon joints, glass panes, and solid brass hardware.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-planed back panels, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, period-correct brass or iron fittings, and natural patination across the timber surfaces.

Position the cabinet as a focal storage piece in a dining room, study, or living space to display ceramics or curated books, balancing warm timber tones against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply clear beeswax sparingly once or twice a year following the timber grain, and keep the piece away from direct radiator heat or damp walls.
