Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Slotted brass screws securing the flush handles: pre-crosshead hardware that fits.
Turned corner roundels on the front stiles: commercial cabinetmaker details.
Natural oxidisation inside the recessed brass pulls: decades of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Victorian gentleman's library bookcase cabinet from 1890 uses mahogany with a warm brown finish and brass hardware. The upper section has sliding glass doors with timber frames, revealing multiple green shelves inside. Below, the base contains a double bank of eight drawers fitted with recessed brass drop handles. The top corners of the upper cabinet display circular rosettes, and simple mouldings finish the cornice and plinth. The whole piece stands 245 cm high, 164 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. In a home today, this cabinet suits a study, office, or living room to store books, papers, or display collections. The glazed top section keeps contents visible yet protected, while the numerous drawers below offer organised storage for smaller items. The classic proportions and timber grain fit traditional or transitional interior schemes.

FAQs

Victorian mahogany bookcase cabinets typically feature two-part construction, combining glazed upper doors for display with solid lower drawers or cupboards for concealed storage.

High-grade mahogany timber was favoured for its stability and fine grain, often paired with glass panes and solid brass handles or fittings.

Look for hand-dovetailed drawer joints, period brass recessed handles, original glass, and secondary woods such as pine or oak used for internal drawer linings.

Position it as a statement storage piece in a home office or living room, filling the upper shelves with books, ceramics, or art objects to contrast warm wood tones.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain to preserve the finish, and clean glass surfaces with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.
