This table lamp dates from the 1920 period in an Art Deco style, combining gilt metal, brass, and fabric materials with gold and black colours. The piece stands with a black drum shade positioned above a slender openwork stem, which centres on a lattice pattern urn motif with a pineapple form knop. The neoclassical detailing includes a stepped flared base and a stepped square base with fan moulding, all finished in a softly aged gilt. The overall visual effect draws on Art Deco glamour through its geometric stem and metallic construction. Measuring 71 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, this item functions as practical task or accent lighting. Such a lamp suits placement on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or dining space to provide focused illumination while contributing early twentieth-century decorative character to the interior scheme.

FAQs

Art Deco Odeon style lighting emerged during the 1920s and 1930s, inspired by theatrical and cinematic architecture. Key design characteristics include streamlined geometric forms, stepped bases, stylized classical motifs such as urns or fluting, and metallic surface finishes.

Lamps from this period were commonly constructed using cast metals, brass, bronze, or spelter, often finished with gilding, silver plating, or patinated lacquer. Shades were typically made of fabric, silk, or opaque etched glass.

Authentic pieces generally feature cast metal components with noticeable weight, period-consistent mechanical joinery, and symmetry in geometric proportions. Wear on original gilding or plating and evidence of original brass light fittings also help indicate age.

An Art Deco table lamp works well as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, console table, or bedside cabinet. Pairing metallic finishes with dark neutral tones creates contrast within contemporary, eclectic, or traditional rooms.

Gilt metal surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical solvents, water, or abrasive polishes, as these can strip away delicate gilded coatings and original patination.
