This solid silver hip flask, made by JB Chatterley & Sons Ltd in 1939 during the Art Deco period, is fashioned from sterling silver with a polished finish in a silvery tone. The piece has a curved rectangular body and features a hinged flip top with a knurled edge on the cap and a tight mechanism that seals well. Light surface scratches and a couple of shallow bruises show gentle use over time. Measuring 10.5 cm in width, 2 cm in depth, and 9.5 cm in height, the flask holds 125 ml and weighs 160 grams. In a modern home, this gentleman's library accessory sits neatly on a sideboard top or desk. It functions as a decorative item or a practical pocket flask for outings, and brings mid-century character to an interior.

Hip flasks gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from glass bottles into contoured metal vessels designed to sit discreetly inside pocket garments. By the early 20th century, sterling silver became a standard material due to its non-reactive properties and polished appearance.

Authentic silver hip flasks feature soldered sterling silver bodies, often contoured gently to fit against the torso. A captive or bayonet hinged cap with a fitted seal prevents leakage and preserves the liquid inside.

Authentic English silver pieces feature official hallmarks stamped directly into the metal. These stamps include a makers mark, a town mark, an assay mark such as the lion passant, and a specific date letter denoting the year of manufacture.

A silver hip flask functions as a decorative accent piece when displayed on a wooden sideboard, curated bar cart, or open bookshelf alongside vintage glassware and leather-bound volumes.

Silver items should be polished gently with a specialized silver cloth or non-abrasive paste to manage natural oxidisation, avoiding harsh chemical dips. Internal chambers require rinsing with warm water and thorough drying prior to storage.
