Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This full height bar stool dates from the nineteenth century in an English country style. The construction combines a solid elm seat with beech framing, finished in a dark brown timber colour with a time worn patina. The top exhibits a carved, contoured saddle seat with raised edges, supported by four robust turned legs. Two tiers of ring-turned stretchers intersect the legs horizontally for added stability. Measuring 74 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, this seating option suits rustic farmhouse interiors. The piece functions effectively at a raised counter or breakfast bar in a kitchen or dining area, providing a sturdy and functional seat for daily use.

FAQs

High stools with turned legs originated as practical utilitarian seating for commercial taverns and workshops throughout the nineteenth century. Built for durability and elevated work surfaces, these functional designs transitioned into domestic kitchens and bars over the twentieth century.

Traditional high stools are constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, ash, or elm. The joints are mortised and tenoned, complemented by turned stretchers positioned at varying heights to reinforce structural integrity and serve as footrests.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-lathed irregularities in the turning, natural wear along the front footrest stretcher, and subtle variations in wood grain polish acquired through extended use.

A turned high stool introduces texture and historical contrast when placed alongside modern kitchen islands or breakfast counters. It functions equally well as an occasional side piece or plant stand in narrow contemporary spaces.

Maintain timber seating by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually. Avoid placing the wood near direct heat sources or high moisture areas to prevent timber shrinkage and joint loosening.
